Slow Acre

A 20-home neighborhood designed so neighbors actually meet.

The site plan: homes ring a shared green, with cars kept at the edge

1The problem

"I miss when I could walk over and ask for a cup of sugar," a longtime neighbor told me. Most housing is designed for speed, so it quietly decides that residents won't meet.

2What I built

  • A 20-home neighborhood plan built around everyday contact: shared paths, porches that face each other, common gardens.
  • A written business plan, plus papers on loneliness and human connection in the age of AI.
  • A pilot in my own apartment building: a monthly potluck that grew from 8 people to 50.

3A decision I made

Before drawing anything, I interviewed people who already live in cohousing, so the design comes from residents rather than my assumptions.

4What changed

  • 300+ cohousing residents interviewed
  • Plans reviewed by architects
  • Feedback from 15 HOAs
  • Approved by 4 developers and HOAs
