1The problem

Most financial literacy classes teach budgeting, which teaches kids to fear running out. Kids from wealthier families pick up investing and compounding at the dinner table; kids from lower-income families often learn money as scarcity. Plenty teaches wealth-building instead: investing, compounding and ownership.

2What I built

  • A gamified online course with simulations. In one lesson, students get $100 in a simulation and compete to grow it the most.
  • The Glimmer Globe, a children's book that reached #1 Bestseller in Amazon's Children's Financial Literacy category in August 2026.
  • Library events where I read the book and teach the lessons.

3A decision I made

Someone suggested running "the world's largest marshmallow test" for publicity. When I read the research, I changed course instead. A 2018 replication found the original effect shrank sharply once family background was considered, and a University of Rochester study showed kids stopped waiting when an adult broke a small promise first.

Kids who don't wait may not lack willpower; they may have learned that promises break. So I rebuilt the lessons, starting with compounding, as a promise that is kept.

4What changed

  • 20 partner schools, including schools in India and Tanzania
  • 7,000+ students
  • 15 library events
